As with any Interior Space of your home, bedrooms (Teen and Children’s spaces included) should absolutely represent your style, comfort and most assuredly a place your mind can relax, feel inspired and rejuvenate. Now achieving this with your teenage son or daughter can seem like no easy feat, but its 100% possible with a little direction and planning ahead. There are 5 primary rules when tackling your teens new space that I assure you, if you keep these in mind, the process and end result will be equally enjoyable. Input and Involve. Set aside some time with your teen to find images and styles they are drawn to. Colors, textures, art work, tones…all of it. Once you have a decent idea of what they’re drawn to create options within each element of the space such as bedding, art work, decor, wall color/ wall paper, etc. Set Boundaries. This one piggy backs onto point #1. When giving selections and options to choose from set the boundaries here and now. i.e. “Yes we can add x color to your space, but walls remain neutral.” Same goes for budget. Creating these up front allows for the rest of the process to flow a bit easier and give everyone direction and an end result to really look forward to. Age forward, subtly…Now if only my 40 something self would listen to that helpful hint. hmmm. Okay, in all seriousness. Teens are hypersped enough into adulthood. If there are items or elements of design they’re drawn to that air on the younger side of things…Incorporate it ! If its artwork, find a fancy frame and tone the images to black and white to keep on design trend if needed. If its bedding or decor…find the compromise in smaller elements that pull that signature style with a more neutral base on the larger aspects of the room. That way, the item(s) will pop for them, while maintaining a more sophisticated look along the way.
